Over the summer, 90 teens and I had the privilege of participating in the Cook County Southland Juvenile Justice Council’s Career Compass Project. What began as a simple opportunity to gain experience, earn money, and grow as young leaders quickly turned into something far more meaningful. We built friendships, learned responsibility, and felt genuinely supported by the adults who poured into us every single day.

That’s why, when I was told that I—an incoming college student preparing for a major life transition—might not receive my final paychecks due to a sudden lack of funding, my heart sank. After putting in long hours and giving my all, the possibility of not being compensated was stressful and discouraging. I worried about how I would cover my expenses and whether all my hard work had been in vain.

But this is where the true heart of the program shined.

The adults, staff, and facilitators didn’t just shrug their shoulders or give up. Instead, they stepped in with compassion, commitment, and determination. Even with limited resources and unexpected setbacks, they went above and beyond to advocate for us. They made phone calls, pushed for answers, and fought to make sure we were treated fairly. Their actions showed us that we weren’t just participants—we were young people they genuinely cared about.

Because of their persistence, support, and unwavering advocacy, I received my pay. For that, I am deeply grateful.

This experience taught me something powerful: our community leaders don’t just talk about supporting youth—they show it through their actions. They stand with us, fight for us, and make sure we are seen and valued.

I am sincerely thankful for the Cook County Southland Juvenile Justice Council and everyone involved. Their commitment to putting youth first made a lasting impact on me, and I will carry that experience with me as I continue my journey into college and beyond.
